What are Leagues?

By playing matches in the Match Poker Online app, you will automatically be placed into a League.

Your League is initially determined based on your performance in the first five matches you play each Season – known as ‘Placement Matches’ – in conjunction with your IFMP Rating.

This will determine which of our five Leagues you will be sorted into. See below, in order from our lowest league (Dove) to our highest (Phoenix):

Scoring

Players score 3 League Points (LPs) for winning a Quick Match, 2 LPs for placing 2nd, 1 LP for 3rd, -1 LP for 4th, -2 LPs for 5th and -3 LPs for 6th.

These LPs are doubled for Battle Royale matches.

Players’ scores are aggregated throughout a season.

Bonus Points

Players are given Bonus Points every day. Bonus points will either double the points gained from placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd, or they will offset points lost from placing 4th, 5th or 6th.

Players are unable to have more than 30 Bonus Points at any one time, so they will lose the benefit of gaining additional Bonus Points if they are not used.

Key thing to remember with Bonus Points: Use them or lose them!

Whilst a player’s score resets when they move between leagues (see Promotion & Relegation below), they retain all Bonus Points that they haven’t yet spent.

Bonus Points reset to zero at the start of each new League Season

Promotion & Relegation

Players are not restricted to the League to which they are allocated. Their performance throughout the season is taken into consideration.

This means that players who outperform their peers in a particular League will get promoted to the next League up (during a season), while those who fail to meet the level of play of their peers will be relegated to the next League down.

Being relegated or promoted will mean that your score resets to zero. Bonus Points do not reset to zero.

How does Promotion / Relegation work?

Typically, a player has to have played 5 or more matches within a League (i.e., after their initial 5 placement matches) to be eligible for promotion or relegation. Sometimes this can more matches if a player’s performance is inconsistent or is consistently at a medium-level for their league (meaning they are not eligible for promotion or relegation).

An exception to this is that players who play very infrequently (for example, less than once a week) can find themselves facing relegation before having played 5 matches in a League – we implemented this because we didn’t want players hogging spots in a League that more active players deserve. So a player who doesn’t play often enough could be relegated if enough other players surpass them. This is more dire in Phoenix League. Because spaces are so limited in Phoenix League (there are only 24), any player who is not playing often enough and well enough to continually earn their spot in Phoenix could find themselves relegated.

CONDITIONS FOR PROMOTION:

In all our Leagues except Phoenix, the conditions that a player must satisfy in order to be promoted are:

  1. The player must have played at least 5 matches in that League;
  2. The player must have an average score that is better than 90% of players in their League;
  3. The player must have an average score that is better than the bottom 10% of the League above their current League.

For Phoenix League, the 90% and 10% rules are widened. Depending on tweaks made by developers to ensure fairness, this could be between 70% and 30% to 60% and 40%. Additionally, there must be players that are eligible for relegation in the Phoenix League. If, as a hypothetical, there were 24 players in Phoenix who had only been there for a couple days, none of them would be eligible for relegation and so no player in the Condor League could be promoted. As soon as a Phoenix player becomes eligible for relegation, a promotion will be given to the most deserving Condor player.

CONDITIONS FOR RELEGATION:

In all our Leagues except Phoenix, the conditions that a player must satisfy in order to be relegated are:

  1. The player must have played at least 5 matches in that League OR been in that League for a given period of time (subject to tweaks, this could be 5-7 days)
  2. The player must have an average score that is worse than 90% of players in their League;
  3. The player must have an average score that is worse than the top 10% of the League below their current League.

For Phoenix League, the 90% and 10% rules are widened. Depending on tweaks made by developers to ensure fairness, this could be between 70% and 30% to 60% and 40%. Additionally, in Phoenix League, players can find themselves relegated after just a few days if they do not play. This is because Phoenix League has high turnover, especially in the lower echelons, so that all the players in Phoenix are constantly earning and deserving of their position. We especially do not want players to ‘hog’ spots in Phoenix just because they managed to ‘get there’.

League Seasons

Each Season of our League Competition ends at 05:59:59 GMT on the first day of each month. The next season starts immediately

Players may play as many matches as they wish. All matches are counted towards League performance.

Season Results – those who placed in our Phoenix League – are added to our Hall of Fame each month.

Rewards

All players who finish a Season in the Phoenix League will be given a medal recognising their efforts, and will be granted entry into the next World Cup Playoffs. Medals can be tallied for multiple Seasons, but each player can only earn eligibility into the World Cup Playoffs once per World Cup Event.

The overall winner – that is, the player who has the highest score in the Phoenix League at the end of a Season, will be awarded the League Champion Trophy.
